Sustainable Nantucket always thought the Dreamland theatre was an important icon in the Historic District and would make a great year-round community center and performing arts haven, but we had no money to buy it.  So when we learned that some of our summer neighbors wished they could acquire the Dreamland for just that purpose, we offered to help. We researched historic preservation projects involving movie theatres elsewhere in the country, provided administrative support, helped build the new board of directors, did mailings, held meetings, facilitated legal advice and participated in the launch of the Nantucket Performing Arts Center (NPAC). After a year of preparation, this new organization was poised to save a community treasure and made a full price offer for the Dreamland. But a private developer made an offer that same week and we missed the acquisition.

Our model of incubation was a success, even though the first object of NPAC’s mission was lost. The good news is that we now have a well-prepared nonprofit in place when new opportunities arise for promoting the arts and preserving community venues.
