Petitioning the Town of Nantucket to join the Campaign for Climate Protection sponsored by ICLEI

The Sustainable Nantucket Green Council (SNGC) devoted many hours in 2007 and early 2008 to researching and communicating to Town staff and elected officials the various aspects and implications of joining, as a community, the International Council of Local Governments for Sustainability and participating in their Cities for Climate Protection Campaign.

On April 20, 2008, Michael Kopko, Patty Roggeveen, and Brian Chadwick, on behalf of the Nantucket Board of Selectmen, signed a resolution to have Nantucket participate in the ICLEI’s (International Council of Local Environmental Initiatives) Cities for Climate Protection Campaign. This signing occurred, at the request of Sustainable Nantucket, at the second annual Earth Day Nantucket event hosted by Bartlett’s Farm and organized by Bruce Marshall-Jones.

The signing of this document is an historic moment for Nantucket, and a formal, public declaration by the leaders of our community of their strong commitment to energy conservation, reduction of greenhouse-gas emissions and climate protection.

Previously, on Wed, March 12th, 2008, the Selectmen had approved Sustainable Nantucket’s formal request to sign the town of Nantucket up as a participant in the ICLEI’s (International Council of Local Environmental Initiatives) Cities for Climate Protection Campaign with a unanimous vote.

Nantucket now joins over twenty-seven participating communities in Massachusetts alone, including, among others:  Amherst, Barnstable, Boston, Falmouth, Gloucester, Hull, Kingston, Newburyport, Newton, Northampton, Salem, Somerville, Springfield, Williamstown and Worcester.

Our thanks go to our stalwart Green Council volunteers for helping this initiative take shape, and to the Town’s Energy Study Committee & the Board of Selectmen for taking the time to review our research, and for endorsing this motion.
