By that we mean we encourage and support the purchase of any downtown real estate by both local business people and by the Town itself. We want to see as much core district ownership remain or come into local hands as possible. If we could wave a magic wand we’d love to see at least 50% of core district commercial properties, including the boat basin and the waterfront, in local or Town ownership in perpetuity. We know that the former Sherburne holdings have been conveyed as a huge block and now come under the control of one (we hope benevolent) developer. But we want to support any new transaction that would deliver deeds to local entrepreneurs or the Town.

We tried to influence the outcome of the Dreamland transaction through incubating the Nantucket Performing Arts Center (NPAC) (click for story) and will continue to join any effort and offer any assistance to facilitate the retention of local ownership or new local ownership of downtown properties. To us, a balance of local control of core district real estate is the best way to preserve the character of the downtown and keep the lights on year round as much as possible.
